last couple of gigs in 2008

hi

nick only has two official concerts in the books for this year due to acting commitments, the courthouse arts centre with michelle plum (and chris layhe of the icicle works) and then headlining the hartlepool folk festival the night after.

there may be some other gigs booked between now and the new year - and nick usually plays over the festive period at some point - so do keep a look out.

nick and his various bands/line-ups had a very successful summer - many thanks for your support.

recordings are being planned for the new year, and do check out the michelle and nick cd, contact us to get hold of a copy - only £3.

otley/saltaire/michelle & nick cd

from nick's myspace blog this morning;

"hi

well otley fest started in grand style with a great (though i say so myself!) michelle and me gig, with a lovely vocal cameo from dr dunc. lovely audience in korks and great turns all round. dave vermond was particularly on cracking form. it reminded me that i am as much a fan of dave's writing and performance as i am of mcnabb, young, springsteen and dylan. fact.

tonight (friday) there's a change of venue. since the sad demise of the red lion, the acoustic gigs have moved into the whitakers beer garden. we are promised fine weather so it shouldn't be a problem and there is a gazebo up! looking forward to it! no michelle guesting tonight, but hopefully chris bunyan on cahon.

tomorrow (saturday) sees us at the rugby club, which is a great venue, sandwiched between karl robin's new band (should be ace) and the deeply fab dave v! that's a full hall bros set with guests michelle and chris bunyan.

then it's the maddest sunday ever! 12 noon we kick off a rock set at the whitakers beer garden. it'll be a shorter than normal set as the acoustic concerts need to start just after 2, then it's a dash over to saltaire to play the piazza stage (lovely big outdoor gig) with the rock line-up, then back to otley to play the civic centre with michelle (and dunc cameoing again). mad stuff!

hope to see some of you during the weekend! if only to purchase the new michelle and nick cd that we've recorded at the home studio this week! it's great, a 4 track 'demo' for only £3!

then i start rehearsals for a new touring play. hmmm.

from nick's myspace blog re: rodley no show

from nick's myspace blog...

"rodley fest/stuff
Current mood: loved
Category: Music

hi all

i've had a number of enquiries about what time we (hall bros band) are appearing at the rodley fest tonight (saturday).

this gig was taken off our listings a while ago and the organisers informed. i can only assume that our name has been left on the posters and other publicity. we will NOT be appearing at rodley fest. this decision was made because the gig interfered with the travel arrangments of one member of the band.

sorry to anyone who turns up to see us tonight - enjoy the rest of the acts though, i'm sure it will be a good do :-).

michelle and i had a GREAT live session on Russell Walker's BBC show this week that went out simultaneously on Radios Leeds, York and Sheffield. great versions of undertow and bierley hill and a fun interview.

thanks to russell and darren (producer) for making us so welcome. BBC tea is great!

no gigs now till september, then a flurry of festivals then a winding-down for winter.

plans upcoming? solo album (and/or duo album with michelle) early next year, hall bros album in the middle of next year.

undertow on the radio

from nick's facebook pages this morning...

"Undertow ep is now available on iTunes USA and Second Life... just waiting on iTunes UK, but my record label are being great and are right on it! Undertow will be played on BBC Radio Leeds, and I've approached some of the more 'artist-friendly' radio shows. You can help by requesting 'Undertow' by Nick B Hall at Tom Robinson's 6music show, Janice Long, Johnny Walker, Terry Wogan, Sunday Morning Show (Aled!!) and Mike Harding on Radio 2! Any help/support much appreciated!"

from nick's myspace blog re: courthouse

"Hi

Sorry to anyone who was disappointed that Michelle and I didn't appear at the Courthouse Arts Centre last night. We were there, had paid for our guest-list and had indeed soundchecked, when - due to circumstances beyond our control and not our fault - we had to leave the stage and indeed the building and not perform.

We're playing there in October with a full duo set and no way will anything stop us that night.

Take care

from nick's myspace this morning

posted by nick b hall from his myspace blog this morning...

"hi all

just thought i'd knock out a quick chatty blog... lots of interesting things happening... great two shows at beverley festival at the weekend (one with the halls, one with michelle), but we didn't make the lindley woodstock for reasons various. we probably upset people there but, hey, i decided a few years ago that i was going to say 'no' more and not worry about the feelings of others as much, as i used to make myself ill worrying about that!

songs are pouring out at the moment.... the ones i'm very proud of are 'michelle's song', 'world domination now!', 'bierley hill', the finally-finished 'the fall and the flood' and the half-written 'the big surround'. i hope to play all these songs at my wee solo gig in otley at the red lion next sunday. hopefully michelle will join me onstage.

i'm hoping to go and lig with my friends magna carta at their grassington festival gig tomorrow - maybe see some of you there? could be mc's last gig in grassington which makes it even more of an occasion.

so, i'm tired but happy at the moment.

see you all soon i trust

Sunday 8 June 2008

"Hi

Nick

PS oh yeah, Michelle and I sang 'Daydream Believer onstage with original Monkee Peter Tork last night! I have a very interesting life!"

Friday 6 June 2008

michelle plum & nick b hall support peter tork tomorrow

THIS FROM PROMOTER JOHN KEENAN WITH DETAILS ABOUT TOMORROW'S CONCERT...

Peter Tork of The Monkees is making a one-off stop at Otley Civic Centre to talk about his time in The Monkees and to play some of their hits. It's a solo gig and a very rare event. Peter is over in Europe for several festival dates.
Because he's staying in the North of England we've decided to put on this special gig at very short notice. There are 200 tickets available on the door (at 7.30pm) plus some advance from Jumbo Records, (0113 245 5570) Leeds or Waye & Son Travel Agents (01943 463244) in Otley.
When you think about it, this International star of stage and screen is just about the biggest name ever to have appeared in Otley. Can anyone say different?

bbc radio leeds tonight... 'undertow' out on itunes 27th july... lambley tomorrow...

nick b hall (after two thoroughly enjoyable gigs this weekend) will be appearing on the durbervilles bbc radio leeds roots music show TONIGHT. he'll be interviewed, play a song live and hopefully other songs from the forthcoming undertow ep will be featured. you can hear the show on 92.4, 95.3 FM, 774 AM or online at bbc.co.uk/leeds or bbc.co.uk/westyorkshire.

the undertow ep is available to download now at the confidential records website... but is officially released on itunes and other major download sites on 27th july. if everyone buys the ep on that week, there is a chance of a chart placing.

centenary square and peter tork support, with michelle plum / new songs

nick b hall, in his excellent new duo with michelle plum, has just been asked to perform two contrasting but equally exciting live concerts.

on saturday 31st may (just before nick zooms off to perform at fountains abbey) nick and michelle will perform a half hour concert in the open air at bradford centenary square for bradford music week. the duo will be onstage at midday prompt and then will have to dash straight off up the dales. this should be a brilliant concert in an unusual setting. it's free and therefore shouldn't be missed.

on saturday 7th june, nick and michelle will be performing as the special guests of the legendary peter tork (of the monkees) at otley civic centre for legendary promoter john keenan. this is a concert not to be missed, as nick and michelle are only going to do a few interesting, quirky or 'prestige' gigs a year, and the chance to see them AND a legendary figure such as peter tork is a bit 'once-in-a-lifetime'. the civic is one of nick's favourite venues and he always plays a blinder there. tickets are available from manor books and music in otley and info can be found from john keenan at www.liveinleeds.com

nick and michelle have been writing and demoing new material and two of nick's new songs 'the fall and the flood' (bad weather as a metaphor for life!) and 'world domination now!' (a well-aimed rant against the political wing of the christian right) could find their way into the upcoming solo and duo sets. nick is very happy with the way the demos for the new album 'world domination now!' are shaping up and the album could be out for christmas at this rate.

Thursday 8 May 2008

first review of 'hurts like hell'

here is part of the first review of 'hurts like hell' from the woven wheat whispers site;

"The four tracks on this EP show off Nick's considerable talent as both singer and songwriter and show he has a knack for creating catchy songs that have appeal to audiences in either a local folk club or on a larger, more mainstream stage. These are songs, that with some radio play could easily become big sellers. The opener, Patching up my Soul, brings the Icicle Works to mind, being a powerful and hook-laden song with a very singable chorus. Hurts like Hell is a strong and tender "lost love" ballad, while Undertow is a brooding low key song chock full of emotion and sincerity.

The Man Apart closes the EP and has the vibe of a Celtic romp and should be a real crowd pleaser when played live. There is honestly nothing to criticize here. These are timeless songs, high on melody content and with a commercial edge.

A folk rock gem for the 21st century."

'Hurts Like Hell' e.p to get full release on i-Tunes etc

a word from nick just posted on his myspace site;

"Hi

Have been in the musical doldrums a bit of late and decided quite suddenly today that I should get around to giving the 'Hurts Like Hell' e.p a proper release. This is a record I made a few years ago with Chris O'Neill and Dave Reilly and is a recording I'm particularly fond of.

It will include Undertow, Hurts Like Hell, Patching Up My Soul and the rarely heard The Man Apart. I'm dropping Big-hearted Northern Boy because I can! The ep has been available through the lovely but relatively obscure Woven Wheat Whispers folk download site, but I've now negociated (in one day!!!) a release deal and publishing deal through Confidential Records and Maori Music Publishing. The record will be available through i-Tunes and other major download sites and will also be chart-eligible. I might make a bit of a hoo-ha about it, what the hell?!

The record will have new cool artwork and I'll post details of official release dates as soon as possible.

Finally I'm fired up about music again! If in doubt - release something!!!

Love and hugs

Nick x"
